Gonzaga Bigs Too Much For Toreros In 77-60 Victory
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Robert Sacre had 18 points and 11 rebounds as Gonzaga beat San Diego 77-60 on Saturday night for the Bulldogs 100th win at the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened for the 2004-05 campaign.
Since the McCArthey Athletic Center opened for the 2004-05 season the Bulldogs are 100-7.
Elias Harris and Sam Dower scored 15 apiece for Gonzaga (16-3, 6-1 West Coast) and Gary Bell Jr. added 11. Dower scored 13 of his points in the second half and Harris finished with 13 rebounds.
Darian Norris led San Diego (7-12, 2-5) with 20 points. Dennis Kramer had 14 and Johnny Dee added 10.
Gonzaga's size was too much for San Diego. The Bulldogs outrebounded San Diego 39-29 and had 42 points in the paint, compared to just 30 for the Toreros.
"They were good. They were back engaging people," Gonzga head coach Mark Few said of his bigs."That is such a key to us. In the three games that we lost we weren't good at that. When all three are in there, bringing in what they bring, that's kind of who we are and that's who we expected ourselves to be and prepared ourselves to be. When they bring that, that's a good sign for our program."
Gonzaga led by as many as 24 points despite being up just 32-30 in the opening minute of the second half.
Few also praised the effort of the Toreros, coached by fifth-year head coach Bill Grier who spent 16 years on the Gonzaga staff prior to leaving for USD.
Billy's done a great job. He's got a nice backcourt that can hurt you off the drive and they can really shoot the ball. He ran some really nice stuff, created some space for those shooters and the little guy (Johnny) Dee doesn't need much space," Few said. "But I thought we defended pretty darn well for about 32 minutes of the game. We really made them take tough shots and then just let our guard tonight a couple different spurts in the second half."
The Bulldogs have just one game on tap this week, a Thursday date at the University of Portland. The Bulldogs don't return to the McCarthey Athletic Center until Feb. 9 when Saint Mary's College visits. The Bulldogs will be at WCC newcomer BYU Feb. 2 and at Pepperdine University Feb. 4.
