Gonzaga Returns Home To Face BYU On National Gonzaga Day

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University returns to West Coast Conference play Thursday when BYU visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for an 8 p.m. game.

The Zags will be meeting the newest member of the WCC as the Cougars are in just their second season of WCC competition since joining the conference July 1, 2011. The Bulldogs won 2-of-3 against the Cougars last season, losing in Provo, Utah, 83-73, winning at the McCarthey Athletic Center 77-58 and downing the Cougars 77-58 in the WCC Tournament semifinals at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The series is tied 2-2 in Gonzaga's NCAA Division I history, the Cougars, behind All-American Jimmer Fredette, taking an 89-67 victory in the 2011 NCAA Third Round in Denver, Colo., the season prior to BYU joining the WCC. The Zags claimed a 46-41 victory Dec. 16, 1949, prior to Gonzaga entering the NCAA Division I ranks.

Thursday is the inaugural National Gonzaga Day as Zags prepare to unite - in spirit and at dozens of special events nationwide - to celebrate and support the University's mission to educate people for others. The festivities are part of Gonzaga's 125th birthday celebration being held throughout the 2011-12 academic year. In the McCarthey Athletic Center, the men's basketball team will battle BYU. The Gonzaga women will tip-off against Pepperdine University at 7 p.m. PST from Malibu, Calif. Special NGD events in downtown Spokane and at 30 alumni chapters across the country (plus chapters in Calgary, Alberta, and Tokyo) will celebrate Gonzaga in its 125th Anniversary year. President Thayne McCulloh will deliver some good news about Gonzaga's future during a special halftime program broadcast live over the Internet from the Gonzaga-BYU men's basketball game.
