Zags Earn Tough Road Win Over Pilots

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Gary Bell Jr. had 18 points, Elias Harris added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Gonzaga beat Portland 74-62 Thursday night for its 18th straight win in the series.

Robert Scare added 16 points on 5 of 5 shooting for the Bulldogs (17-3, 7-1 West Coast), who won their fourth straight game. Kevin Pangos had 12 points.

Ryan Nicholas had all 13 of his points and eight of his 10 rebounds in the first half for the Pilots (5-16, 2-6), who have lost five in a row. Tim Douglas added 11 points and Derrick Rodgers nine.

Gonzaga came out sizzling in the second half, making 15 of 22 shots from the field and 18 of 20 free throws after the break. They scored the first eight points of the half to take the lead for good.

"We played a lot better in the second half," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. "I thought that whole first 20 minutes, they outhustled us, they outplayed us, and they outcoached us and they deserve a lot of credit for that. They had us frustrated and just not doing the things that we've done all year to be successful."

Trailing 35-33, Gonzaga went on 15-5 run capped by Marquise Carter's layup off a Portland turnover that gave the Bulldogs a 48-40 lead with 9:21 remaining.

The Pilots, who led the nation in 3-point shooting the last three seasons, made just 6 of 21 attempts on Thursday.

The victory extended Gonzaga's winning streak in the series to 18 games and was the Bulldogs' 16th consecutive win at the Chiles Center. The Zags have won 32 of the last 33 games against Portland.
