Men's Basketball Ranked No. 24 By USA Today Coaches
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team, winners of both games last week to run its record to 18-3 overall, didn’t impress the 32 coaches who vote in the USA Today Top 25 as the Bulldogs fell three spots to No. 24 this week.
The Zags downed the University of San Diego 59-56 and BYU 84-69 in a pair of home victories to solidify their spot atop the West Coast Conference standings at 8-1 at the halfway point of conference play.
Gonzaga garnered 114 points, four behind No. 23 Ohio State University and comfortably ahead of No. 25 University of Oklahoma.
The Bulldogs were in the “also receiving votes” category of the Associated Press Top 25 for the third straight week, receiving 51 points this week. Surging University of Texas moved into the 25th spot with 142 points after being unranked last week. The University of Connecticut was the first team in the ARV category with 67 points.
The University of Arizona, which remained perfect at 20-0 and sits atop both polls, received 63 of 65 first-place votes in the AP balloting and 31 of 32 votes from the coaches. Syracuse University received the remaining first-place votes in both polls to remain second.
The Bulldogs are on the road this week with a Wednesday game at Santa Clara University and a Saturday contest against the University of San Francisco as the second half of conference play begins. After having six of their nine WCC games at home the Bulldogs will play 6-of-9 on the road in the second half of conference action, including four straight to end the regular season. Gonzaga also has a Feb. 8 non-conference road game at the University of Memphis for ESPN’s College Game Day.
