Bulldogs Jump Three Spots To 7th In AP, USA Today Polls
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University jumped three spots to seventh in both the Associated Press and USA Today Top 25 men's basketball polls released Monday.
The Bulldogs, who fell from eighth to 10th a week ago after a narrow 64-63 loss at Butler University, took advantage of some upsets involving Top 10 schools to improve their lot.
Gonzaga downed BYU 83-63 in the West Coast Conference showdown for first place and disposed of the University of San Francisco 66-52 to run its overall record to 19-2 and its WCC mark to 6-0.
The Bulldogs are on the road this week at Loyola Marymount University Thursday and the University of San Diego Saturday.
Duke, which was No. 1 last week, was routed by the University of Miami 90-63 for the third-worst loss by a top-ranked team to allow the University of Michigan to grab the top spot in the AP poll for the first time since the school's Fab Five team 20 years ago during the 1992-93 season. Michigan received 51 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel Monday. The University of Kansas moved up one spot to No. 2 and had 13 first-place votes. They are the only one-loss teams in the poll. Indiana University, the University of Florida, which drew the other first-place vote, and Duke University complete the top five.
The expected shakeup also took place in the USA Today poll, resulting in the closest voting for the No.1 spot in over a season.
Kansas moved into the top position, finishing just three poll points ahead of No.2 Michigan. The Jayhawks received 16 first-place votes to the Wolverines' 14. It was the closest finish for No.1 since the poll of Feb. 28, 2011. Kansas was also involved that week, finishing four points behind Ohio State.
