Gonzaga Completes Bay Area Swing Against Second Place Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Gonzaga University (9-1) faces a University of San Francisco (7-3) squad Saturday that has title aspirations with the second half of West Coast Conference play just one game old.

The Dons have thrust themselves into the title picture and with Saint Mary’s College falling to the University of San Diego Thursday, the Dons and the Gaels are knotted for second at 7-3.

USD’s win gives Gonzaga at least a two-game bulge over everybody in the conference. The Bulldogs were the near-unanimous pick to win the WCC regular-season crown, with USF tagged for fourth.

Gonzaga snapped a three-game War Memorial Gym losing streak against USF last year when the Zags captured a 71-61 verdict. The Bulldogs suffered a disheartening 66-65 setback in 2012 as Rashad Green scored on a leaner with 3.3 second remaining after falling in overtime in 2010 and ’11.

Gonzaga leads the series 47-22 and has won 27 of the last 31 meetings between the teams since the 1999 season. The Zags won the first meeting in Spokane this season 69-41 on the opening weekend of West Coast Conference action as the Dons lost their 25th straight game to Gonzaga in Spokane.
