The GU women return to action on Thursday night with a game at Santa Clara University while the men's team will face the Broncos on Saturday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
MEN'S Basketball - Adam Morrison, Gonzaga
Gonzaga junior forward Adam Morrison continued to make a strong case for National Player of the Year honors, leading the Bulldogs to a perfect 7-0 record during the month of January. The 7-0 record pushed the Zags to the top of the WCC standings at the mid-way point of the conference season. The Spokane, Wash. native led the nation in scoring, tossing in 31.3 points per game to go along with 5.6 rebounds per game. Morrison was extremely efficient, connecting on 54.4 percent of his attempts from the field (74-of-136), including 43.8 percent from beyond the arc (14-of-32). The 6-8 forward made opponents pay for fouling him, knocking down 82.6 percent from the charity stripe (57-of-69). Morrison scored 30 or more points in five of the Zags' seven contests, including topping the 40-point barrier in back-to-back games to close out the month. Morrison was red hot versus San Francisco and Portland in the Zags' last two games of the month, scoring a combined 83 points in 75 minutes of action. He dropped in 41 points to go along with nine rebounds in Gonzaga's 84-75 win over USF. He followed that up with 42 points in the Zags' 81-64 win over Portland to become the first Bulldog since Frank Burgess to have back-to-back 40-point games (41 vs. Idaho State 12-9-60 and 44 vs. Whitworth 12-12-60). After his tremendous month, Morrison leads the nation with a 29.0 points per game average and has converted a national-best 200 field goals, 18 more than the next closest player. He has four 40-plus scoring efforts and has scored 30 or more points in a game nine times this season. Morrison garnered three WCC Player of the Week honors during the month of January.
