MBB's Sabonis Named WCC Player of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Freshman Domantas Sabonis was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his efforts in Gonzaga’s pair of wins, league officials announced today.

Sabonis posted a pair of double-doubles for the Zags on the way to a pair of victories over Portland and Memphis this week. He averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds in the victories while making 9-of-14 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

First, in a 64-46 win over Portland on Thursday, Sabonis was 3-for-5 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free throw line to score 13 points and grab 11 rebounds. He posted the same totals in an 82-64 win over Memphis on Saturday while going 6-for-9 from the floor. Of his 22 total rebounds for the week, eight were on the offensive glass. He also posted three assists and a steal on the week. The freshman is leading the nation in field goal percentage at .718.

Sabonis is the fourth Gonzaga player to earn the honor this season. Przemek Karnowski, Kyle Wiltjer and Kevin Pangos were each named league player of the week earlier in the year.

Gonzaga is back on the road this week with a pair of games in the Bay Area. On Thursday, the Zags take on Santa Clara at 8 p.m., followed by a Saturday tilt at San Francisco at 8:30 p.m. Both games will be televised on ESPN2.
