Bulldogs No. 20 In USA Today Poll, Return To AP At No. 23
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team moved up four spots to 20th in the USA Today Top 25 and made a return to the Associated Press rankings at No. 23 Monday following a three-week hiatus.
The Bulldogs ran their overall record to 20-3 and pushed their West Coast Conference mark to 10-1 with a road sweep at Santa Clara University and the University of San Francisco. The Zags have at least a three-game lead on the rest of the WCC field, with BYU and USF the closest challengers at 7-4 with Saint Mary’s College at 6-4.
There will be a showdown between the AP’s No. 23 Bulldogs and No. 24 University of Memphis Saturday in Memphis when the two teams collide for ESPN College Game Day at the FedEx Forum.
But first the Bulldogs will be out for a little revenge Wednesday when the University of Portland visits, the Pilots handing Gonzaga its lone WCC loss Jan. 9 in Portland.
Gonzaga received 237 points in the AP balloting and is on the heels of No. 22 University of Connecticut with 252 points. In the USA Today rankings Gonzaga received 214 points to trail No. 19 University of Oklahoma with 227. Memphis was the first team “also receiving votes” category in the USA Today poll.
Syracuse University took advantage of the University of Arizona’s first loss of the season to the University of California and moved into the top spot in both polls, the Orange unanimous selections receiving all 65 first-place votes from the sportswriters in the AP poll and all 32 first-place nods from the coaches in the USA today rankings. Arizona slipped to No. 2 in the AP polls and to No. 3 in the USA Today poll. Wichita State University moved to No. 2 in the vote of the coaches.
