Men's Basketball Has Highest Ranking Since December, 2008
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's basketball team reached its highest ranking since December, 2008, Monday when the Bulldogs moved up one spot to sixth in both the Associated Press and USA Today rankings.
The Bulldogs, seventh in both polls last week, posted victories at Loyola Marymount University and the University of San Diego last week to run their overall mark to 21-2 and their West Coast Conference-leading record to 8-0. Gonzazga was the first team in the country to reach 21 wins after being the second team to hit the 20-win plateau behind the Michigan.
Gonzaga was ranked fourth in both polls Dec. 8, 2008, the Zags 6-0 at that point of the season. The Bulldogs downed Washington State in their next outing, then suffered their first loss to Arizona on their way to a 28-6 season that ended with a NCAA Sweet 16 loss to North Carolina.
Gonzaga, which has been ranked all 14 weeks of the season, returns home this week to face Pepperdine Thursday at 8 p.m. and Loyola Marymount Saturday at 5 p.m. in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
For the fifth straight week there is a new No. 1 in The Associated Press' poll. This time it's Indiana.
The Hoosiers, the preseason No. 1 who held the top spot for the first five weeks of the regular season, moved up two places Monday, following their weekend win over No. 1 Michigan and No. 2 Kansas' loss to Oklahoma State.
Duke started the current streak of new No. 1s and was followed by Louisville, Duke again, Michigan and Indiana. The last time there were five No. 1s in as many weeks was the last five polls of 2008-09 when it was Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Connecticut again, North Carolina and Louisville.
The Hoosiers received 58 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel while Florida, which jumped two spots to second, got the other seven.
In the USA Today rankings, Indiana reclaimed the top spot it held for the first month of the season. The Hoosiers garnered 25 of 31 first-place votes. The Wolverines fell only one place to No.3.
