Bulldog Up Four Spots In Coaches Poll

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - Behind a 12-0 start in the Big West Conference, Pacific received its first ranking in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released Monday.

In the midst of a 14-game winning streak overall, the Tigers (18-2) moved into the poll for the first time in school history at No. 24 with 71 votes. The school that produced former NBA top pick Michael Olowokandi, Pacific is in search of its second straight NCAA Tournament berth. The Tigers upset Providence in the first round last season.

Despite eight ranked teams losing on Saturday, Illinois (23-0), North Carolina (19-2) and Kansas (18-1) remained in the top three spots.

The Fighting Illini, who garnered all 31 first-place votes and 775 points, are atop the poll for the 10th straight week.

On the strength of becoming the first Big East Conference team to begin 20-0, Boston College moved up one spot to fourth with 666 points. Kentucky (17-2) rounds out the top five.

Wake Forest (19-3), which handed Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke its second loss of the season on Wednesday, climbed up a spot to sixth in front of Syracuse (21-2). Duke (17-2) fell two spots to eighth.

Louisville (20-3) remained in ninth and Oklahoma State (17-3) rounded out the first 10.

Washington (19-3), which captured its 20th consecutive home win against UCLA on Saturday, moved up one spot to No. 11, followed by Michigan State (15-4), Arizona (19-4) and Connecticut (14-5).

Pittsburgh (15-4) and Utah (19-3) are tied at No. 15. The Utes surged up seven spots after wins against Brigham Young and San Diego State extended their winning streak to 14 games during the past week.

Gonzaga (17-4) climbed up four spots to No. 17 while Oklahoma (17-4), Alabama (17-4) and Cincinnati (17-5) round out the first 20.

Behind a tough Big Ten loss to Minnesota on Saturday, Wisconsin (15-5) dropped two spots to No. 21. Texas (15-6) is No. 22 followed by Texas Tech (14-5), which entered the poll for the first time this season.

After Pacific, Villanova (13-5) remained at No. 25 after a win over Providence on Saturday.

Georgia Tech and Maryland fell out of the poll.
