No Change At Top Of USA Today/ESPN Poll

Feb. 6, 2006

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - The top five teams remained unchanged, but Georgetown continued its ascent up the rankings and Iowa made a strong statement in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released Monday.

Georgetown, which entered the poll at No. 22 last week, won at DePaul on Tuesday and at home to then-No. 9 Pittsburgh on Sunday to move up six slots to 16th. The Hoyas have won six straight games, including a 87-84 victory over then-No. 1 Duke.

Iowa re-entered the poll at No. 19 after wins at Purdue and vs.

then-No. 20 Michigan. The Hawkeyes have won seven of their last eight games, including four wins against members of the top-25.

Connecticut (20-1) collected 22 first-place votes and 761 points from a panel of 31 coaches and kept the top spot for the third straight week.

Duke (21-1) picked up 749 points and eight first-place votes.

Memphis (21-2) again was third with 709 points and received the remaining first-place vote.

Villanova (17-2) is fourth and Gonzaga (18-3) rounds out the top five.

Florida (20-2) moves up one slot to sixth and is followed by Texas (19-3), George Washington (18-1) and Illinois (20-3), which fell three slots after Saturday's shocking loss against Penn State that ended its 33-game home winning streak. West Virginia (17-4) is 10th.

Michigan State (17-5) starts the second 10, followed by UCLA (19-4), Pittsburgh (17-3), Tennessee (16-3) and North Carolina State (18-4). The Panthers dropped four spots after the loss to Georgetown.

Following the Hoyas at No. 17 is Ohio State (16-3), with Boston College (17-5), the Hawkeyes and Oklahoma (14-5) rounding at the top 20.

Indiana (13-6) remained 21st and is followed by Michigan (16-4), Washington (16-5), North Carolina (14-5) and Colorado (15-4).

Maryland and Northern Iowa dropped out of the rankings.
