Gonzaga On Verge Of ESPN/USA Today Top 10 Again

Feb. 8, 2010

McLEAN, Va. - While road losses hampered a couple of Top 10 teams, Gonzaga used a big road win at Memphis to vault to the cusp of the Top 10 in the ESPN/USA Today men's basketball poll released Monday.

The Bulldogs jumped two spots to No. 11 after a 66-58 win at Memphis last Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak to the Tigers. The Bulldogs, 19-4 overall, try for a 12th straight 20-win season Thursday as well as first place in the West Coast Conference when Saint Mary's visits the McCarthey Athletic Center. The 8-1 Gaels have a half-game lead over 7-1 Gonzaga. The Bulldogs won the first meeting in Moraga.

Losses on the road sent Villanova and Michigan State tumbling in this week's ESPN/USA Today men's basketball poll -- which once again is led by Kansas and includes three Big East teams .

The Wildcats, who lost at Georgetown on Saturday, fell from second to fifth, while the Spartans, who fell at Illinois, slipped from fifth to 10th in the latest rankings of 31 NCAA Division I head coaches.

Kansas (22-1) remained No. 1 after surviving the week unscathed. Kentucky (22-1) moved up a spot to No. 2, followed by Syracuse (23-1), West Virginia (19-3) and Villanova (20-2).

Villanova and West Virginia meet Monday night in a Big East battle. Kansas is at No. 14 Texas.

Purdue (19-3) moved up a spot to No. 6, followed by Duke (19-4), which leapfrogged Georgetown. The Hoyas (17-5) remained No. 8 despite a loss to South Florida three days before the win over Villanova.

Kansas State (19-4) moved up two spots to No. 9, ahead of Michigan State (19-5). The Spartans host Purdue on Tuesday in another battle of top 10 teams.

Cornell, which climbed into the poll at No. 25 last week, moved up three spots to No. 22.
