Bulldogs Look To Carry Momentum To LMU Game Saturday

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University tightened the West Coast Conference men's basketball race with its 73-59 victory over Saint Mary's College Thursday at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

The loss moved the Bulldogs (9-2) to within one game of the Gaels (11-1) in the loss column and kept the Zags one game ahead of Loyola Marymount University (9-3) and BYU (8-3). In addition to playing for a regular-season title, teams are also battling for seeding into the WCC Tournament. The top two seeds receive a double-bye into the semifinals while the third and fourth seeds receive a bye into the quarterfinals.

After disposing of Saint Mary's College there's little time for celebration as Gonzaga faces Loyola Marymount University Saturday at 5 p.m. in the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Lions are one of the hottest teams in the West Coast Conference with six wins in their last seven games, the only setback in that stretch to West Coast Conference leader Saint Mary's College.

Gonzaga leads the all-time series with Loyola Marymount University 54-23 following a 62-58 win at LMU in the first meeting this season. The Bulldogs have won four straight and 33 of the last 36 meetings dating back to 1996. The last win for the Lions was a 74-66 verdict at Gersten Pavilion in 2010 and the Lions haven't defeated Gonzaga in Spokane since Feb. 7, 1991, when they took a 91-79 verdict in the Martin Centre, a streak of 21 straight games.

LMU has won in the McCarthey Athletic Center, however, upsetting No. 2 seed Saint Mary's College in the 2006 WCC Tournament semifinals before losing to Gonzaga 68-67 the next night in the title game when the Lions Chris Ayer missed a layin in the waning seconds.
