Bulldogs Capture Three SWABS Awards
Feb. 14, 2001
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's basketball carted away three of the major awards as selected by the Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters and presented at the Greater Spokane Sports Association Youth Sports Awards Luncheon on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs' Sweet Sixteen squad was named Team of the Year and guard Matt Santangelo was named Amateur Male Athlete of the Year, each winning for the second straight year. Head coach Mark Few, who in his first season guided the Bulldogs to the Sweet Sixteen for the second straight season, was named Coach of the Year. He became the second straight Bulldog to win Coach of the Year accolades, Dan Monson capturing the honor the previous season.
Few was on hand for his award and also accepted for Santangelo, who is currently playing professionally in Italy. Richie Frahm, a senior on last year's squad, accepted on behalf of the team.
Current Bulldog men's basketball senior Mark Spink was one of the guest speakers to the soldout audience of 1,200 that included hundreds of high school athletes and coaches from eastern Washington and northern Idaho.
The awards were presented during the noon luncheon that also honored Spokane area youth for their accomplishments over the past year. The annual night banquet, a fixture of the GSSA and SWABS for years, was discontinued this season.
