Gonzaga Up One Spot To 16th In Coaches Poll

Feb. 14, 2005

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - Absorbing its first loss of the season at Notre Dame last Tuesday, Boston College dropped two spots to sixth in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released Monday.

The only Big East team to start a campaign with 20 straight wins, the Eagles (20-1) fell to the Fighting Irish behind the hot shooting of Colin Falls and Chris Thomas. Falls made a career-high seven 3-pointers and Thomas scored 19 points for Notre Dame, which beat Boston College for the fifth time in their last six meetings.

The only remaining undefeated team in Division I, Illinois (25-0) garnered all 31 first-place votes for the fourth straight week and 775 points to remain atop the poll for the 11th straight week.

Kansas (20-1) moved up a spot to second with 735 points and Kentucky (19-2) jumped two spots to third with 681 points.

North Carolina (20-3) had a tough loss to Duke and a nice win at Connecticut but fell two spots to fourth with 671 points. Wake Forest (21-3) rounds out the top five.

After Boston College, Oklahoma State (19-3), Duke (18-3), Syracuse (22-3) and Michigan State (17-4) round out the top 10.

The Cowboys jumped three spots, the Blue Devils stayed put after a win over the Tar Heels and an overtime loss at Maryland. The Orange slipped two spots while the Spartans rose from 12th.

Arizona (21-4) and Louisville (21-4) start the second 10 with Washington (20-4) and Utah (21-3) tied for 13th and Pittsburgh still at 15.

Gonzaga (19-4), Alabama (19-4) Connecticut (15-6), Pacific (20-2) and Wisconsin (16-6) round out the top 20. A week after it received its first ranking in this poll, Pacific jumped five and looks like it is well on its way to a second consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. Last season the Tigers upset Providence in the first round.

Gonzaga swept Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on the road last week, and will try to clinch no worse than a tie for the West Coast Conference regular-season title with home wins Thursday against San Diego and Saturday against San Francisco.

Cincinnati (18-6), Oklahoma (17-6), Charlotte (17-4), Florida (15-6) and Texas Tech (15-6) complete the poll. Charlotte and Florida were not ranked last week.

Texas (16-7) and Villanova (14-6) fell out of the poll.
