Bulldogs Back In Top 10 Of ESPN/USA Today Rankings

Feb. 15, 2010

McLEAN, Va. - Gonzaga is back in the top 10.

The Bulldogs, who moved back into first place in the West Coast Conference and ran their overall record to 21-4, moved two spots to ninth in this week's ESPN/USA Today Top 25. The Bulldogs spent two weeks in the Top 10 earlier this season, ranked 10th one week and moving to eighth the following week.

Gonzaga, with a two-game lead in the loss column over both Saint Mary's and Portland, sets its sights on a 10th straight WCC regular-season title with games Thursday at Loyola Marymount and Saturday at Pepperdine.

Kansas and Kentucky remained the top two teams in ESPN/USA Today men's basketball poll released Monday afternoon, but the rest of the top 10 was jumbled after a week filled with upsets.

Kansas (24-1) and Kentucky (24-1) both remained unscathed with a pair of double-digit wins for each. Villanova (22-2) moved up two spots to No. 3, thanks in part to a win over former No. 4 West Virginia. Purdue (21-3) also climbed two spots to No. 4, thanks in part to win at former No. 10 Michigan State.

Syracuse (24-2), which fell to Louisville on Sunday, slipped from third to fifth. Duke (24-1) moved up a spot to No. 6, followed by Kansas State (20-4), which moved up two spots. West Virginia (19-5), which also lost a three-overtime thriller at Pittsburgh last week, slipped to No. 8, followed by Gonzaga (21-4) and Georgetown (18-6). The Hoyas fell two spots after losing at Rutgers. Michigan State fell from 10th to 11th.

Among teams making a big leap, Ohio State (20-6) moved up four spots to No. 12 and Vanderbilt climbed five spots to No. 19. thanks to a win over No. 18 Tennessee.

In matchups of interest this week, Purdue visits Ohio State on Wednesday, Syracuse is at Georgetown on Thursday and Kentucky visits Vanderbilt on Saturday. Sunday, Villanova is at Pittsburgh while Ohio State visits Michigan State.
