Gonzaga Jumps One More Spot

Feb 16, 2004

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University continued its move up the Associated Press Top 25 men's basketball rankings, the Bulldogs jumping one more spot to No. 6 in this week's poll.

Stanford University and Saint Joseph's University, the only teams to defeat the 21-2 Bulldogs, are 1-2 this week, respectively. Each moved up one spot following Duke University's loss Sunday to North Carolina State University. The Blue Devils fell from No. 1 to third. Mississippi State University and the University of Pittsburgh round out the top five ahead of Gonzaga.

The No. 6 ranking equals the highest ranking ever for the Bulldogs, who finished sixth in the final AP poll of the 2002 season.

Gonzaga ran its winning streak to a school-record matching 14 by winning a pair of road games at the University of San Francisco and Saint Mary's College last week to clinch its fourth straight West Coast Conference title. Gonzaga, 11-0 in the WCC, has now won or shared eight WCC titles since 1994. The Bulldogs play their final three WCC games at home beginning with Wednesday's visit from the University of Portland. The only road game left on the regular-season schedule is a Saturday visit to the University of Tulsa. The Bulldogs conclude the regular season Jan. 26 against the University of San Diego and Jan. 28 against Santa Clara Univesity, the latter the final game in The Kennel.
