SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Junior Kyle Wiltjer was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his efforts in Gonzaga’s pair of wins, league officials announced today.
The award is the second time Wiltjer has been recognized by the conference this season. He was also named Player of the Week in mid-December.
Wiltjer continued his strong month with a pair of double-figure games in two Zag wins this week. He averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in victories over Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine to help drive Gonzaga's nation-leading home win streak to 40 games. In an 80-51 win against LMU on Thursday, Wiltjer knocked down four three-pointers on the way to 21 points and snared 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Then on Saturday, Wiltjer scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds while going 4-for-4 from the free throw line in a 56-48 win over the Waves. For the week, he shot .500 (11-22) from the field, .455 (5-11) from three and .778 (7-9) from the free throw line. He now has 10 games with at least 20 points and 22 games with at least 10 points.
Wiltjer’s second award gives Gonzaga a league-high five this season. Domantas Sabonis, Przemek Karnowski, and Kevin Pangos were each named league player of the week earlier in the year.
Gonzaga is back on the road this week with a pair of games in the Bay Area. On Thursday, the Zags take on Pacific at 8 p.m. on KHQ/ROOT Sports, followed by a Saturday tilt at Saint Mary’s at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
