Bulldogs, Flying Dutchmen Have Longest Win Streak
Feb. 18, 2001
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University and Hofstra University share the longest current winning streak in NCAA Division I men's basketball today, thanks to Clemson University.
The Bulldogs and Flying Dutchmen each won their 14th straight games Saturday, while Clemson ended top-ranked University of North Carolina's 18-game winning streak Sunday with a 75-65 home victory.
Gonzaga will get an opportunity to sit alone atop the winning streak list when the Bulldogs travel to Santa Clara University Thursday to open the final weekend of the West Coast Conference regular season. Hofstra doesn't play again until Sunday at Drexel University. Gonzaga ends the regular season Saturday at the University of San Diego, site of this year's WCC Tournament.
The Bulldogs wrapped up the top seed into the WCC Tournament March 3-5 and clinched no worse than a tie for the WCC regular-season title by defeating Pepperdine University 82-69 Saturday afternoon to cap a 12-0 season in The Kennel. Hofstra topped New Hampshire 80-61 on the road.
The Bulldogs beat a Pepperdine team coached by Jan van Breda Kolff. His father, Butch van Breda Kolff, was the former head coach at Hofstra prior to his retirement seven seasons ago.
