Bulldogs Look To Keep Title Hopes Alive At San Francisco

            SAN FRANCICO, Calif. - Gonzaga University concludes its Bay Area swing at the University of San Francisco Saturday in a 5 p.m. contest.

            he Dons took last season's match-up at War Memorial Gym, 96-91 in overtime, giving USF two straight home wins against the Zags. USF took an 81-77 overtime decision in 2010. The teams met in the WCC Tournament semifinals last season, Gonzaga prevailing 71-67. Gonzaga captured the first meeting this season in the McCarthey Athletic Center 74-63. Gonzaga leads the series 44-21 and has won 25 of the last 28 meetings between the teams since the 1999 season.

            Gonzaga University remained alone in second place in the West Coast Conference and kept its regular-season title hopes alive with a 73-62 victory at Santa Clara University Thursday.

            With Saint Mary's College suffering its second loss in a week, the Bulldogs are back in control of their destiny for a 12th-straight WCC regular-season title. SMC (12-2) sits atop the standings with Gonzaga (11-2) in second and BYU (10-3) in third. Loyola Marymount University (10-4), which beat SMC Wednesday, is fourth.

            With a 21-4 record this season, Gonzaga has matched its start in 2010 when the Bulldogs raced to a similar start. The Bulldogs finished the season 27-7 after advancing to the NCAA Second Round. The 2006 squad lost three of its first 12 games, ran off a 20-game winning streak and finished the season 29-4 after a NCAA Sweet Sixteen loss to UCLA.
