Bulldogs Climb To Third In AP, Hold Third In USA Today Polls
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's basketball team climbed two more spots to third in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and remained third in the USA Today Top 25 released Monday.
Gonzaga received three first-place votes from the coaches and two from the sportswriters.
The AP ranking equals the highest ranking the Bulldogs have ever received from the nation's sportswriters. The Zags were third in the final two polls of the 2004 season, receiving one first-place vote the week of March 9 and two first-place votes in the final AP poll of the year the week of March 16.
Gonzaga's highest ranking in the vote of coaches was second on March 15, 2004, when they got one first-place vote behind Stanford University.
The Bulldogs have a 25-2 record for a 92.6 winning percentage to lead the nation. The most regular-season wins for the Bulldogs is 26 in 2002 when Gonzaga took a 26-3 regular-season record into the West Coast Conference Tournament where they won three games and went on to finish 29-4 overall for the most wins in program history. The 2006 team had 25 regular-season wins, taking a 25-3 record into the WCC Tournament where they won two games then won two more in the NCAA Tournament to finish the season 29-4 to match the 2002 team for most wins in a season.
Indiana University remained atop the AP poll with the University of Miami moving up one spot to second and Gonzaga edged No. 4 Michigan State University by 12 points for the third spot.
Indiana and Miami are one-two, respectively, in the USA Today rankings, the Hurricanes just 18 points ahead of Gonzaga, which is 25 points ahead of No. 4 University of Florida.
Gonzaga is home for a pair of WCC contests this week beginning with a rare Wednesday game against Santa Clara University at 8 p.m. and a Saturday match-up with the University of San Diego at 4 p.m.
