Zags Look To Move Closer To WCC Regular-Season Crown

SPOKANE, Wash. - Its perfect West Coast Conference season still intact following a road sweep last weekend, Gonzaga University attempts to move another step closer to wrapping up the WCC regular-season title with a pair of home games this week.

Santa Clara University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for a rare Wednesday home game at 8 p.m., followed by the University of San Diego Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.

The 12-0 Bulldogs are on the threshold of taking back the title Saint Mary's College claimed last year to end Gonzaga's 11-year stronghold on the crown. The Gaels, 11-2, are the only team probably given a legitimate chance of catching the Bulldogs as third-place BYU is 9-4, meaning the Zags would have to lose their four remaining games to give BYU a tie if the Cougars would win out. Gonzaga, in essence, has a three-game lead over the Gaels as the Zags hold the tiebreaker by virtue of the season-sweep.
Gonzaga holds a 48-30 lead in the series with Santa Clara after taking the first game this season at SCU 81-74. The Bulldogs had a 9-game winning streak in the series snapped Jan. 20, 2011, at SCU 85-71. That's the only win for SCU head coach Kerry Keating in 12 tries against the Bulldogs, who have won 26 of the last 27 meetings.

The Broncos handed the Bulldogs their first setback in the McCarthey Athletic Center Feb. 12, 2007, 84-73, Gonzaga's first loss after 38 straight wins since the facility opened for the 2004-05 season. The setback also snapped a 50-game home winning streak for the Zags, who had won their final 12 games next door in the Martin Centre. SCU played the last game in the Martin Centre, falling 80-64 in 2004.
