Five Zags Named To WCC Winter Academic Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University placed five basketball players on the West Coast Conference Winter Academic Team which was released on Thursday. Senior Stephanie Hawk, junior Michelle Elliott and sophomore Jami Bjorklund were honored from the Gonzaga women's team while senior Sean Mallon and junior David Pendergraft were recipients from the GU men's team. The Gonzaga women are in action tonight against the University of San Diego as the Bulldogs look to clinch the West Coast Conference regular-season title for the third-straight year.
Hawk graduated with a 3.60 GPA in business administration and currently holds a 3.84 GPA after her first semester as a MBA graduate student. The native of Ontario, Ore., who earned first-team ESPN The Magazine All-District 8 honors earlier this season, currently leads the Bulldogs with 14.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. Hawk has scored in double-figures point in 22 out of the Zags 28 games, including nine 20+ point games and one 30+ point game. She has nine double-doubles to her credit, including seven double-doubles in West Coast Conference action. Hawk became just the 12th Gonzaga player to score over 1,000 points this season, became only the 11th player to grab over 600 rebounds and only the sixth player to score 1,000 and grab 600 in their career. Hawk has earned WCC Player of the Week four times this season and was named the WCC Player of the Month for January.
Elliott has a 3.60 in psychology. Elliott has played in 27 games for the Bulldogs this season, getting the starting nod 10 times. She is averaging 10.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. She has scored in double-figure points 14 times this season, including two 20+ point performances. Elliott was named WCC Player of the Week once.
Bjorklund currently holds a 3.93 GPA in business administration. The Spokane, Wash., native is currently averaging 9.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steal per game. Bjorklund has scored in double-figure points in 14 Bulldogs games, including two 20+ point performances. She scored a then career-high 21 points against No. 2 ranked University of North Carolina and then bested her career-high when she dropped 25 points against the University of San Francisco.
Mallon has a 3.54 graduate school GPA in organizational leadership and 3.29 undergraduate GPA in political science. Mallon, who garnered ESPN The Magazine All-District 8 first team honors earlier this season, has 880 career points and 493 career rebounds. He has started 24-of-28 games this season, averaging 8.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
Pendergraft holds a 3.00 GPA in philosophy and English. He has played in all 28 games for the Bulldogs this season, getting the starting nod twice. Pendergraft is averaging 6.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He has scored in double-figure points four times this season, including a season-high 14 points at Stanford University.
