Gonzaga Zeros In On WCC Regular-Season Crown Saturday

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga hosts the University of San Diego Saturday in a rare 4 p.m. matinee. Coached by Bill Grier, a 16year Bulldog assistant, the Toreros gave the Bulldogs all they wanted at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Feb. 2 before the Zags escaped with a 65-63 victory.

Gonzaga head Coach Mark Few is 32-3 al-time against USD, including 11-1 against Grier.

The magic number for Gonzaga to win its 12th West Coast Conference title in the last 13 years is one - any Gonzaga win or any Saint Mary's College loss and the WCC title comes back to Spokane. The Bulldogs are 13-0, Saint Mary's College 12-2. Both teams have wrapped up the top two seeds for the WCC Tournament, the only thing to be decided now is who gets the top seed.

Gonzaga leads the series against USD 61-20 and has won 31 of the last 33 meetings. The Toreros defeated the Zags 69-62 in the title game of the 2008 West Coast Conference Tournament and 72-63 in the 2003 WCC Tournament title game, both played at USD. The Bulldogs have won 25 straight regular-season games in the series.

The teams met in the WCC Tournament for four straight years from 2000-03 and from 2005-08, Gonzaga 6-2 in that stretch. Grier's lone win against Gonzaga was the 2008 WCC Tournament at San Diego in his first season with the Toreros. Gonzaga set a school record for fewest points allowed in a 68-31 victory in 2011 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
