MBB's Pangos and Wiltjer Named Oscar Robertson Trophy Finalists

ST. LOUIS – Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos and Kyle Wiltjer were named Oscar Robertson Trophy finalists today, announced by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Pangos and Wiltjer represent two of the 14 finalists and are the only set of teammates on the list. The award is to be presented to the national player of the year at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The gala is held annually the week after the NCAA Men's Final Four.

Pangos is putting together a standout senior season at the point guard position, ranking second in the NCAA in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.72. He’s ranked second on the team with 12.0 points per game and first on the team with 5.0 assists per game. He also leads the team with 63 made threes, drilling them at a .460 clip. Earlier this year, Pangos broke the all-time Gonzaga three-point record of 288. He now has 304.

Wiltjer has had a breakout season for the Zags after transferring from Kentucky and redshirting last season. He leads the team with 17.4 points per game, including 24 double-figure scoring efforts. Eleven of those have been 20-plus games. Wiltjer has been among the best in the nation from the field, making 54.3% of his field goals overall, as well as a team-leading 46.9% from behind the arc. He’s been named the Oscar Robertson Trophy National Player of the Week two times, including following his 45-point outburst against Pacific last week. That marked the second-best scoring effort in the nation this season and third-best in Gonzaga history.

The Zags will suit up against visiting San Diego tonight at 8 p.m. at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and GU will be putting its nation-leading 40-game home win streak on the line.
