Gonzaga Men, Women Get Noon Draw At WCC Basketball Tournament
Feb. 27, 2000
Spokane, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's and women's basketball teams won't have to sit around waiting for the West Coast Conference Tournament to begin, both squads of Bulldogs getting the noon slot for the first round games at Santa Clara University's Toso Pavilion.
The Bulldog women (9-18, 2-12) will enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed and face regular-season champion and top seed Pepperdine University (19-9, 12-2) Thursday at noon. Pepperdine swept the season series from the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga's men (21-8, 11-3), who wrapped up the second seed Sunday with a victory at the University of San Francisco, will face No. 7 Saint Mary's College (8-19, 3-11) Saturday at noon as the men's tournament tips off. The Bulldogs are the defending WCC Tournament champions.
Other first-round women's games Thursday have No. 4 University of San Diego facing No. 5 Loyola Marymount University in the second game of the opening session, defending champion and No. 2 Saint Mary's meeting No. 7 Portland at 6 p.m., and No. 3 Santa Clara taking on No. 6 USF in the nightcap.
The rest of the men's first round has No. 1 Pepperdine taking on No. 8 LMU in the second game of the opening session, No. 3 San Diego meeting No. 6 Portland at 6 p.m. and No. 4 Santa Clara and No. 5 USF hooking up in the final game of the day.
The tournament re-seeds for both the men's and women's semifinals, with the highest remaining seed meeting the lowest remaining seed, and the middle two seeds facing each other. The winner of the late first-round game is also automatically placed into the late semifinal. The women's semifinals will be held Friday beginning at 6 p.m., with the men's semifinals Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The women's title and automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament will be decided Sunday at 1 p.m., with the men's title and NCAA berth on the line Monday night at 9 p.m.
The women's championship will be televised on most FOX Sports Net affiliates on the West Coast. The men's championship game will be aired live on ESPN.
This is the 14th year the WCC has held a men's basketball tournament, and is the 9th year for the women's tournament.
