Feb. 27, 2007

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University sophomore Micah Downs is this week's West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performance in the Bulldogs' regular-season title clinching road wins at San Francisco and at San Diego. The two wins gave the Zags their seventh consecutive WCC regular-season title and locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Downs, a transfer from Kansas, was spectacular, averaging 18.0 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, while shooting an impressive 63.6 percent from the field (14-for-22). The 6-8 guard also displayed the long range shooting prowess that made him a McDonald's All-American coming out of high school, knocking down 6-of-9 attempts (66.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Kirkland, Wash. native started the week by dropping in 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field in the Bulldogs' 86-79 overtime win at San Francisco. Downs connected on 4-of-6 three-point attempts versus the Dons. He then exploded for a career-high 20 points on a blistering 80 percent (8-of-10) shooting from the floor in the Zags' 74-64 title clinching win at San Diego. Downs also added six boards, a block, and a steal in the win over the Toreros.

The weekly honor marks the first career WCC Player of the Week award for Downs and the fourth by a Gonzaga player this season.
