Gonzaga Men Top Seed Into WCC Tournament

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Seven-time regular-season champion Gonzaga University will play the first semifinal at 6:30 p.m. at the 21st West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus.

The Bulldogs captured their seventh straight regular-season title in dramatic fashion, overtaking Santa Clara University with road wins Saturday at the University of San Francisco in overtime and Monday at the University of San Diego. SCU, which entered the final weekend with a one-game lead over the Bulldogs, dropped games at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday at in overtime on Monday at Pepperdine University. Gonzaga, 11-3 in the WCC, won the title outright and with it the top seed into the tournament, while SCU enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed and an automatic berth in Sunday's second semifinal.

Gonzaga will meet either No. 4 USF, No. 5 USD or No. 8 Pepperdine on Sunday. USD and Pepperdine meet Friday at 5:30 p.m., the winner facing USF on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the right to face the Bulldogs.

SCU will play either No. 3 Saint Mary's College, No. 6 LMU or No. 7 host Portland in Sunday's 8:30 p.m. semifinal. LMU and Portland meet in Friday's late men's game with the winner taking on SMC in Saturday's second game for a spot against SCU in the semifinals.

The championship game will be played at 6 p.m. Monday with the winner earning the WCC's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga is seeking its ninth straight NCAA appearance.

Friday's LMU-Portland game will be televised on ESPNU, Saturday's semifinals will be televised on ESPN2, with Monday's championship game on ESPN.
