Pairings Announced For Zappos.com WCC Basketball Tournament
Feb. 27, 2011
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's and women's basketball teams both earned byes into Sunday's semifinals of the 2011 Zappos.com West Coast Conference Tournament which begins Friday at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
The Bulldog women, who went a perfect 14-0 in WCC play and won a seventh straight regular-season title, will play the 11 a.m. semifinal Sunday against either No. 4 seed University of Portland, No. 5 Santa Clara University or No. 8 University of San Francisco.
The Gonzaga men, who shared the regular-season title with Saint Mary's College for their 11th straight regular-season crown but enter the tourney as the No. 2 seed, will face No. 3 USF, No. 6 Pepperdine University or No. 7 University of San Diego. The Bulldogs and Gaels split their season series, Gonzaga winning at Saint Mary's last Thursday to move into the tie and both clubs won their regular-season finales. Since the two teams split their series the tiebreaker formula is how each did in descending order of conference finish. Gonzaga split with third-place University of San Francisco while the Gaels swept the Dons, thus giving the top seed to SMC.
The tournament gets underway at noon Friday with a pair of women's first-round games. No. 5 Santa Clara takes on No. 8 San Francisco, followed by No. 6. Loyola Marymount University facing No. 7 San Diego. Saturday's women's action has No. 4 Portland meeting the SCU-USF winner at noon followed by No. 3 Pepperdine facing the winner of LMU-USD.
The Bulldog women face the Portland/SCU/USF survivor at 11 a.m. Sunday followed by No. 2 SMC meeting the Pepperdine/LMU/USD winner. The semifinal winners meet Monday at noon for the title in a game to be televised on ESPNU.
The men's tourney opens Friday with No. 5 University of Portland facing No. 8 Loyola Marymount University at 6 p.m., followed by No. 6 Pepperdine University meeting No. 7 University of San Diego. Saturday has No. 4 Santa Clara University meeting the winner of Portland/LMU at 6 p.m., followed by No. 3 USF meeting the winner of Pepperdine/USD.
The Bulldogs will get the winner of the USF/Pepperdine/USD survivor Sunday in the late semifinal at 7:30 p.m. SMC will meet the SCU/Portland/LMU winner in Sunday's first semifinal at 5 p.m. Both semifinals will be aired on ESPN2 with Monday's 6 p.m. title game on ESPN. BYUtv will televise the Friday and Saturday men's games. Brigham Young University is joining the WCC next season, and BYUtv wants to expose its fans to the WCC.
