Bulldogs, San Diego In WCC Semifinals

March 2, 2002

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - No. 2 seed Gonzaga University will meet host and No. 5 seed University of San Diego on Sunday in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the USD campus.

That scenario unfolded Saturday when USD, the No. 5 seed, topped No. 4 seed University of San Francisco 69-67, and No. 6 seed Saint Mary's College upset No. 3 seed Santa Clara University 72-67 in overtime.

With the re-seeding formula for the semifinals, that means Gonzaga will face USD at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, with No. 1 seed Pepperdine University squaring off against the Gaels 30 minutes following the Gonzaga-USD matchup.

Gonzaga defeated seventh-seeded Loyola Marymount University 82-64, and Pepperdine stopped No. 8 seed University of Portland 77-64 in Saturday's early session. Gonzaga and Pepperdine tied for the WCC regular-season title with 13-1 records, but Pepperdine won the coin toss for the top seed into the tournament.

Under the WCC re-seeding format, the top remaining seed (Pepperdine) faces the lowest remaining seed (Saint Mary's), with the two middle seeds (Gonzaga and San Diego) meeting in the other semifinal. The winner of the late game of the first round (Saint Mary's) is guaranteed a spot in the late semifinal.

There will be no television coverage of the semifinals. Gonzaga's game can be heard in the Spokane area on News Talk 1510 KGA radio and on this web site.

The two winners Sunday meet in Monday's title game at 9 p.m. on ESPN with the WCC's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament at stake.
