March 2, 2005

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University men's basketball player Sean Mallon women's basketball players Shannon Mathews and Ashley Burke have been named to the West Coast Conference Winter All-Academic teams.

Mallon has a 3.29 GPA in political science. He's been one of the keys off the bench as the Bulldogs have rolled to a 23-4 record, a No. 12 national ranking and a 12-2 WCC record for their fifth straight regular-season title.

The Bulldog men open play in the WCC Tournament Sunday at 6 p.m. against a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the semifinals.

Earlier this year Mathews and Burke were also named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America All-District VIII squad, Mathews a first-team pick and Burke a second-team selection. Mallon was a nominee for the District VIII men's team.

Mathews, who was named the WCC Player of the Year earlier this week, has a 3.40 grade point average in journalism, while Burke carries a 3.26 GPA in sociology/public relations. The duo helped Gonzaga post a 14-0 WCC regular-season mark in winning the title and advancing to this week's WCC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. Gonzag begins play Thursday at approximately 2:15 p.m. against eighth-seed University of Portland.
