Gonzaga Men Idle Awaiting Foe For WCC Semifinal Saturday

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's basketball team, the regular-season champion at 16-0 and No. 1 seed into the West Coast Conference Tournament, will play its semifinal game Saturday at 6 p.m. at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas

The brackets for the 2013 WCC Men's and Women's Tournaments were released Sunday.

The Bulldogs, the top seed for the 14th time and seeded into the semifinals, will face No. 9 Loyola Marymount University, No. 8 University of Portland, No. 5 University of San Francisco or No. 4 Santa Clara University in its semifinal matchup to be televised on ESPN2 and aired on the Bulldog Basketball Radio Network including flagship station 1510 KGA in Spokane.

The Gonzaga women, regular-season champions at 15-1, will play its semifinal Saturday at noon against No. 9 Pepperdine University, No. 8 San Francisco, No. 5 LMU or No. 4 BYU. The Zags won their ninth straight WCC regular-season title this year.

The men's tournament, in its 27th season, opens Wednesday with No. 8 Portland facing No. 9 LMU at 6 p.m. The women's tournament, in its 22nd year, begins Wednesday with No. 8 USF facing No. 9 Pepperdine at 3 p.m. All Gonzaga women games in the tournament will be aired on radio station 1050 AM The Key in Spokane.

On the men's side, BYUtv will televise Wednesday's first-round game and Thursday's second round games with ESPNU televising the quarterfinals, ESPN2 the semifinals and ESPN Monday's championship game at 6 p.m. BYUtv will televise all women's games through the semifinals with ESPNU televising Monday's 1 p.m. title game.

The Bulldogs became the first team to go 16-0 in the WCC in the two years of the 16-game format. The Zags earned their fourth undefeated WCC campaign, going unscathed in 2004, 2006 and 2009 when the conference played a 14-game schedule prior to BYU joining the conference last season.

Gonzaga, which won the regular-season title for the 12th time in the last 13 years, will also be trying to claim its 12th WCC Tournament crown since 1995 and reclaim the title Saint Mary's College took from the Bulldogs last season with a 78-74 overtime win. Gonzaga has been in the WCC Tournament championship game a WCC record 18 times, including 15 straight. The last time Gonzaga didn't play for the title was 1997 when No. 2 Saint Mary's downed No. 3 USF 66-59 at Loyola Marymount University. This is the fifth straight season the tournament has been held at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Gonzaga will be idle until learning its semifinal foe Friday. BYU, the third seed, and No. 4 Santa Clara each earn a bye to the quarterfinals and will take the floor on Friday night.  San Francisco and San Diego finished with identical conference marks, split the head-to-head series, and had the exact same record against each WCC opponent.  The Dons have earned the five seed due to the RPI tiebreaker, making San Diego the six.  No. 5 USF plays the No. 8/9 winner Thursday with that winner taking on
No. 4 SCU Friday for the right to face the Bulldogs in Saturday's semifinal.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 6 USD faces No. 7 Pepperdine Thursday with that winner taking on No. 3 BYU Friday for the right to meet No. 2 SMC in Saturday's other semifinal.

The tournament takes Sunday off and plays its championship games Monday with the men's and women's champions receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
