Bulldogs Meet Host Broncos In Semifinals

March 6, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Gonzaga University will meet host University of Santa Clara on Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPN in the second semifinal of the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament.

The Broncos, the No. 5 seed, advanced to the semifinals with an 81-75 win over the fourth-seeded University of San Francisco on Saturday night at the Leavey Center on the SCU campus.

The Bulldogs, 14-0 in the WCC and the top seed in the tournament, defeated the Broncos 79-63 at SCU on Jan. 31, then toppled them 80-64 last Saturday in the final regular-season game and the final game in The Kennel. Gonzaga moves into the new McCarthey Athletic Center next season.

In Sunday's other semifinal, No. 2 seed Saint Mary's College will face No. 3 seed Pepperdine University. Pepperdine advanced with a 78-67 victory Saturday against Loyola Marymount University.

Gonzaga will be shooting for a berth in the tournament finals for the seventh straight season and for its fifth title in the last six years. Gonzaga lost in last year's title game at the University of San Diego 72-63 to snap a streak of four straight crowns.

In Sunday's meeting with SCU the Bulldogs will be playing the tournament host for the fourth straight year. Gonzaga defeated USD in the 2001 and 2002 semifinals at USD in addition to losing to the Toreros in last year's final.

Gonzaga, 25-2 overall and ranked fourth in the country, is all but assured a sixth straight NCAA Tournament berth regardless of the Bulldogs outcome in the WCC Tournament. A loss in the tournament, however, could be crucial as the Bulldogs are in position for their highest NCAA Tournament seed ever.

Sunday's winners meet in Monday's championship game at 9 p.m. on ESPN with the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament at stake.
