Gonzaga To Face No. 9 Seed Broncos In Saturday Quarterfinal

SPOKANE, Wash. – Top-seeded Gonzaga University will face No. 9 seed Santa Clara University Saturday in the 6 p.m. quarterfinal of the West Coast Conference Basketball Championship at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

The Broncos downed No. 8 seed and WCC newcomer University of the Pacific 81-64 Thursday in a play-in game for the right to meet the Bulldogs. In the other play-in, No. 10 Loyola Marymount University upset No. 7 University of Portland 67-64 to set up a Saturday quarterfinal with No. 2 seed BYU. In the other quarterfinals, No. 3 University of San Francisco will face No. 6 seed University of San Diego, and No. 4 seed Saint Mary’s College will meet No. 5 seed Pepperdine University. The Gonzaga-SCU winner will face the SMC-Pepperdine winner in one of Monday’s semifinals.

Gonzaga won both meetings with SCU this season, 74-60 in the McCarthey Athletic Center in the WCC opener, then got a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left from Sam Dower Jr. to down the Broncos 54-52 as the Bulldogs avoided their first loss at Santa Clara since 2001.

The Bulldogs and Broncos last met in the WCC Tournament in the 2009 semifinal in the first year of the tournament moving to The Orleans Arena, the Zags claiming a 94-59 victory. Gonzaga is 7-1 all-time against Santa Clara in the tournament, the lone Bulldog setback coming in 1993 at San Francisco as the third-seeded Broncos claimed a 53-51 semifinal victory over the second-seeded Zags.

Saturday’s game will be televised on ESPN2 and aired on the IMG Gonzaga Radio Network including flagship station 1510 KGA CBS Radio in Spokane.
