Zags, Gaels No Stranger In WCC Basketball Championship

            LAS VEGAS - Gonzaga University and Saint Mary’s College concluded the regular season just a week ago in Moraga, Calif., the Bulldogs routing the homestanding Gaels 75-47.

            Monday the teams meet again in a West Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Championship  at 6 p.m.

            The Bulldogs are the No. 1 seed, the Gaels No. 4.

            The 28-point victory by Gonzaga in the last meeting with Saint Mary’s to end the regular season was the largest margin of victory by either team in the series since the Bulldogs posted a 105-65 victory in the 2001 WCC Championship quarterfinals at San Diego. Gonzaga was the No. 1 seed while SMC was the No. 8 seed.

            Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s will be meeting for the sixth straight time in the WCC Championship after having met in the title game each of the five previous seasons the tournament has been played in Las Vegas. Gonzaga holds a 3-2 edge in those meetings.

            Monday will be the 14th meeting between Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s in the WCC Championship, the Zags holding an 11-2 lead. The teams first met In the 1995 semifinal at Santa Clara, the No. 4 seed Zags taking a 69-59 win over N. 3 seed SMC, propelling the Zags to the championship game where they won their inaugural WCC Championship. The 14 tournament games against Saint Mary’s ties the Gaels with San Diego for the most games for an opponent against Gonzaga in the tourney, the Bulldogs 9-5 all-time against the Toreros in the WCC Championship.
