No. 12 Seed Gonzaga To Meet Virginia In NCAA First Round
March 11, 2001
SPOKANE, Wash. - After spending the last two years in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament, Gonzaga University was shipped out to the South Region for a match-up with the University of Virginia at the Pyramid in Memphis, Tenn., in a Friday contest.
Gonzaga (24-6) was given a No. 12 seed after earning a No. 10 seed each of the last two seasons. Virginia (20-8) enters the NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed after being upset by Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Should the Zags advance past the Cavaliers, Gonzaga would either face No. 4 Oklahoma (26-6) or No. 13 Indiana State (21-11) in the second round. Also appearing at the Pyramid will be No. 1 seed and defending NCAA Tournament champion Michigan State against No. 16 Alabama State and No. 8 California against No. 9 Fresno State.
This will be the fourth NCAA appearance for the Bulldogs, who won their third consecutive West Coast Conference Tournament crown with a 80-77 victory over Santa Clara University last Monday. This will be Gonzaga's second appearance at the Pyramid after previously defeating the University of Memphis, 88-73, in the first round of the 1998 Pre-Season NIT.
Times for each first-round game will be announced at a later date by the NCAA after the television schedule is determined.
