Gonzaga No One-Week Wonder At Top Of Basketball Polls
LAS VEGAS - Gonzaga University is no one-week wonder at No. 1.
In a season when No. 1 has tumbled week after week, the Bulldogs beat Loyola Marymount 66-48 in its first - and so far only - game as the nation's top-ranked team. They will look to win the West Coast Conference tournament title Monday night when they take on Saint Mary's College at 6 p.m. in the fifth straight title-game matchup between the teams in the Zappos.com West Coast Conference Basketball Championship.
Gonzaga received 54 first-place votes and 1,611 points from the 65-member national media panel in the Associated Press Top 25. Duke, which received the other 11 first-place votes, moved up one spot to second with 1,559 points after beating Virginia Tech and North Carolina last week. Indiana dropped one place to third after losing to Ohio State then rallying for the dramatic win at Michigan that gave the Hoosiers the outright Big Ten title.
The Zags garnered 29 of the 31 votes for 772 points in the USA Today voting of coaches. Duke earned the other two No. 1 votes and 736 points.
The Bulldogs moved into the top spot for the first time in program history last week after being No. 2 the previous week. Gonzaga hit the 30-win plateau for the first time in school history Saturday with the win over LMU and bring a 30-2 mark into the title game. Gonzaga finished a perfect 16-0 in the WCC regular-season.
