Stepp Named To District 9 Team

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Gonzaga University junior guard Blake Stepp has been named to the United State Basketball Writers Association All-District 9 team.

This is the latest in a series of honors for the Eugene, Ore., native who earlier was named to the National Association Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 14 team, to the Verizon Academic All-America third team, to the Verizon/College Sports Information Directors of America District VIII All-Academic squad and was also named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year.

Joining Stepp on the writers' squad are Julius Barnes, Stanford University; Tony Bland, San Diego State University; Ike Diogu, Arizona State University; Carl English, University of Hawaii; Jason Gardner, University of Arizona; Jason Keep, University of San Diego; Luke Ridnour, University of Oregon; Phillip Ricci, Oregon State University, and Joe Shipp, University of California.

Jason Gardner of Arizona was named the District 9 Plyaer of the Year, and Stanford's Mike Montgomery nabbed COach of the Year honors.

Stepp is averaging 17.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg and 5.9 assists/game in leading Gonzaga to the WCC regular-season title and into the championship game of the WCC Tournament. The Bulldogs are awaiting selection Sunday in aniticpation of receiving an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga is bidding for its fifth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs' Dan Dickau was named the District 9 Player of the Year last year by the USBWA.
