Bulldogs And Sycamores Meet For Ticket To Atlanta
March 16, 2001
MEMPHIS - It wasn't supposed to happen this way, but the No. 12 seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs will meet the No. 13 seed Indiana State on Sunday afternoon for the right to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in Atlanta. Gonzaga (25-6) advanced to the round of 32 when Casey Calvary tipped in the game winner against Virginia with 9 seconds remaining the contest. The Bulldogs would then watch Roger Mason, Jr., miss on a last second shot and Gonzaga was victorious in a first round NCAA game for the third straight year with a 86-85 win.
Later it was the Indiana State Sycamores (22-11) who upended No. 4 seed Oklahoma, 70-68 in overtime. The two teams will tip-off the game at 11:15 a.m. PST on Sunday at the Pyramid in Memphis. The game will be aired on CBS-TV and can be heard on the radio on KXLY 920 AM.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Gonzaga and Indiana State. Gonzaga is looking to make its third consecutive appearance in the Sweet Sixteen while Indiana State is looking to advance that far for the first time since Larry Bird graced the hardwood in 1979.
