Gonzaga 18th In ESPN/USA Today Poll Heading Into Tournament

March 15, 2010

McLEAN, Va. - Gonzaga University is 18th in the ESPN/USA Today men's basketball poll, while the top four spots look amazing familiar to the top four NCAA Tournament seeds handed out Sunday.

Kansas, Kentucky, Duke and Syracuse earned No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament, and landed in that order in the final ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll of the regular season.

ESPN/USA Today will release one final poll at the conclusion of the Final Four.

Gonzaga (26-6) is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the 12th consecutive year, and if the seeds hold through the first round in Buffalo, N.Y., the Bulldogs could have a say in how the final poll shakes out. If Gonzaga downs Florida State and Syracuse tops Vermont, the Bulldogs would have a Sunday date with the Orange.

Kansas (32-2) and Kentucky (32-2) remained in the top two spots, with the Jayhawks receiving all 31 first-place votes. Duke (29-5), which won the ACC tournament title, jumped past Syracuse (28-4) into the third spot.

West Virginia (27-6), which had been discussed as a possible No. 1 seed in the tournament, moved up one spot to fifth in the poll.

Big Ten tournament champion Ohio State (27-7) and Big 12 finalist Kansas State (26-7) were sixth and seventh, with Butler (28-4) making a big jump from 12th to eighth.

Villanova (24-7) and New Mexico (29-4) rounded out the top 10.

Purdue made the biggest fall, going from fifth to 11th. Georgetown jumped from 22nd to 15th. No teams dropped out of the Top 25.
