Zags To Face Defending National Champs In Sweet 16
March 18, 2001 ATLANTA - Gonzaga (26-6) has advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the third consecutive year and in their wake is defending national champion Michigan State (26-4). The Zags advanced to the South Regional semifinal game with a 85-68 win over No. 13 seed Indiana State. Michigan State breezed into its fourth consecutive Sweet Sixteen with a 81-65 win over Fresno State. Gonzaga and Michigan State now join Duke as the only schools to advance to the Sweet 16 in each of the last three seasons. The other half of the bracket will consist of Temple and Penn State. The Owls advancing with a 75-54 win over Florida while Penn State shocked No. 2 seed North Carolina 82-74. Gonzaga and Michigan State will play in the early game with a tip-off of 4:38 Pacific time. Temple and Penn State will follow 30-minutes following the conclusion of the Gonzaga game. All games will be aired on CBS-TV.
Tickets for the South Regional in Atlanta will go on sale on Monday at noon. Students, faculty and staff may purchase tickets at the Crosby Student Union Building or by calling 323-4087. Season ticketholders and Bulldog Club members can purchase tickets at 323-4202. Tickets will go on sale to the general public starting at 3:00 p.m. and can be purchased at 323-4202. Tickets cost $90 and are for all three games at the Georgia Dome. A $3 service fee will be charged and all ticket sales are non-refundable. Visa or Mastercard must be used to purchase tickets.
