Gonzaga Faces Texas Tech On Saturday
March 17, 2005
TUCSON, Ariz. - Gonzaga University will battle Texas Tech University at 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament from Tucson, Ariz.
The Bulldogs, who earlier Thursday defeated Winthrop University 74-64 to lock up a spot in Saturday's game, sat back and waited for the No. 6 seeded Red Raiders to defeat No. 11 UCLA 78-66.
In Saturday's 12:40 p.m. Pacific Time game, the University of Utah will face the University of Oklahoma.
The winner of the Gonzaga-Texas Tech game will advance to the Sweet 16 next Thursday in Albuquerque, NM, while the Utah-Oklahoma winner will head to Austin, Texas.
The Bulldogs have never faced the Bobby Knight-coached Red Raiders, but the Bulldogs may have a scouting advantage. Nathan Doudney, whose season was cut short with a season-ending knee injury Dec. 7 at Washington State University, played two seasons for Knight and the Red Raiders in 2002 and '03. He transferred to Gonzaga last season and sat out under NCAA transfer rules.
Texas Tech finished third at the National Invitational Tournament in 2003 as Doudney averaged 4.1 ppg. As a freshman the native of Rockwall, Texas, averaged 4.9 ppg for the NCAA Tournament participants.
