Gonzaga Faces Arizona Sunday With Sweet 16 Berth On The Line

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Gonzaga University and the University of Arizona will square off Sunday at 6:40 p.m. PDT in the NCAA Tournament Third Round at Viejas Arena at Cortex Bowl.

The game will be televised on TBS and can also be heard on the IMG Gonzaga Radio Network including flagship station 1510 KGA CBS Sports Radio.

At stake is a berth in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 and a meeting, ironically, with San Diego State University.

While No. 8 seed Gonzaga won its Second Round game Friday on SDSU’s home court, the Aztecs were advancing with a pair of wins at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Gonzaga and top-seeded Arizona have met four times with the Wildcats holding a 3-1 series edge, Bulldog head coach Mark Few at the helm in all four meetings. Gonzaga got its lone win in the series Dec. 17, 2011, when the Bulldogs captured a 71-60 victory in The Battle in Seattle at KeyArena. Arizona coach Sean Miller is 0-2 against Gonzaga.

Arizona coach Sean Miller will be making his third career coaching appearance against Gonzaga Sunday and two of them will have been in the NCAA Tournament. The first time Miller faced a Gonzaga team was the 2006 NCAA Tournament when the Bulldogs topped Xavier 79-75 in an NCAA First Round match-up in Salt Lake City.

Gonzaga and Arizona played one of the most memorable NCAA Tournament games in 2003 when the Wildcats topped the Zags 96-95 in double overtime in the Second Round in Salt Lake City at the Huntsman Center on the Utah campus. It was dubbed an Instant Classic by ESPN, and the game was replayed recently.

While Gonzaga disposed of No. 9 seed Oklahoma State University 85-77 Friday, the Wildcats downed No. 16 seed Weber State University 68-59 to advance.
