March 30, 2018
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Gonzaga men's basketball's Johnathan Williams was named Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American Friday.
The award and team, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's basketball coaches, national basketball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athletes in Division I men's basketball.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.
Williams received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Throughout his three years at Gonzaga, the Memphis, Tenn. native volunteered his time at a number of our community service events. Some of the organizations or events he's volunteered at include the N7/Coeur d'Alene Tribe basketball clinic, Spokane Boys and Girls Club, Sacred Heart Children's Hospital, VA Medical Center, and Camp Goodtimes. He has also made numerous visits to local elementary schools to spend time with the Spokane youth community.
Williams wrapped up a stellar career at Gonzaga. He finished his collegiate career with 1,478 points and 1,019 rebounds, eclipsing the 1,000-point and 1,000 rebound mark during his redshirt senior season. After transferring from Missouri, he scored 893 points and grabbed 564 rebounds at GU. His 1,019 career rebounds were the eighth-most among active players this season.
Williams averaged a team-high 13.4 points and 8.5 rebounds in 2017-18. He also led the Bulldogs with 40 blocked shots. The Memphis, Tenn. native made 56.3 percent of his shots from the field.
West Virginia's Jevon Carter was selected as the Senior CLASS Award winner. Carter, Navy's Shawn Anderson, A.J. Jacobson of North Dakota State, Western Kentucky's Justin Johnson and Georgia's Yante Maten were on the first team. Williams, Vladimir Brodziansky of TCU, Seton Hall's Angel Delgado, Houston's Rob Gray and Army's Luke Morrison made up the second team.
