Gonzaga Hoops Attendance Tops WCC
April 1, 2005
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's and women's basketball teams led the West Coast Conference in attendance this season, the first year for the Bulldogs in the new McCarthey Athletic Center.
The Bulldog men averaged 5,994 fans for 13 home games, better than double the University of San Francisco's average of 2,985 fans for 16 home games which was second behind Gonzaga. The Bulldogs played in front of a sellout crowd of 6,000 for 12 of the 13 home games this season and averaged a sellout of 6,000 fans for all seven WCC home games.
The Gonzaga women averaged 1,817 for 14 home dates, well ahead of the 696 of USF for 15 home contests. In WCC play the Bulldogs averaged 2,021 fans, including a WCC and Gonzaga record 5,825 fans for the regular-season finale against the University of Portland. Gonzaga also drew 3,603 fans for its WNIT first-round home game against Brigham Young University and had 3,035 fans come through the turnstiles for its game against Loyola Marymount University. LMU was second behind the Bulldogs in WCC games only with an average of 688.
"We're pleased with the turnout of our fans, especially on the women's side," Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth said. "Both teams are putting an exciting product on the court. Men's tickets have been hard to come by for several years, and we see nothing but continued growth for our women's attendance."
Roth said season ticket renewal letters will be mailed to men's and women's season ticket holders in the weeks ahead. Roth said there is a waiting list for men's season tickets, but the general public can sign up for 2005-06 women's season tickets by going to the Gonzaga web site at http://www.gonzagaarena.com/t&d/wwaitinglist.aspx.
