Ryan Spangler Given Release From Men's Basketball Program
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University sophomore-to-be Ryan Spangler has been granted his release from the men's basketball program, Gonzaga head coach Mark Few confirmed Wednesday.
"Ryan indicated a desire to get back closer to home to further his career. He did a great job both on and off the court and was an excellent teammate. He gave us a lot of solid minutes this past season. We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors," Few said.
Spangler, a 6-8, 232-pounder from Blanchard, Okla., appeared in 22 games off the bench this past season, averaging 6.6 minutes/game. He averaged 2.5 ppg and 2.4 rpg for the Bulldogs. He went 23-for-41 from the field for 56.1 percent.
He scored in double-digits twice this past season, getting 12 points against Longwood University and 11 points against the University of Portland. He also grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds against Longwood. He played a season-high equaling 21 minutes against West Virginia in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, scoring 4 points and grabbing 8 rebounds as the 10th-seeded Bulldogs downed the No. 7 seeded Mountaineers.
Spangler said the decision was a tough one to make and was something he has been contemplating for some time.
"I've made a lot of great friends this year at Gonzaga and love it here. But I want to see my family more, and I want my family to see me play more," he said. "I've been thinking about it for the last month or two. It was tough, but I'm doing the right thing," Spangler said.
