April 28, 2011

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Three Gonzaga University women's basketball players and two men's basketball players earned a spot on the 2011 West Coast Conference Winter All-Academic Team.

Senior Janelle Bekkering was named to Women's Basketball All-Academic team for the third-consecutive season, along with classmate Claire Raap, who made the team for the first time in her career. Senior Tatriana Lorenzo earned honorable mention accolades.

Kelly Olynyk was named to the Men's Basketball All-Academic team, while teammate Mike Hart earned honorable mention.

"The West Coast Conference is very proud to honor and recognize these exceptional student-athletes," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "Their strong commitment to academic success is evident as, once again this year, we recognize repeat honorees, including several three-time recipients."

Bekkering, who also earned Capital One Academic All-District 8 accolades earlier this season, started all 36 games for the Bulldogs this season. She averaged 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game, while hitting a team-best 51 3-pointers. Bekkering currently has a 3.48 GPA and will graduate this May with a Civil Engineering degree.

Lorenzo, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration, with a major in accounting, in December of 2009, currently is pursuing her master's degree in school counseling and has a 3.90 GPA. She played in 29 games in her final season with the Bulldogs, scoring 18 points and dishing out 18 assists.

Olynyk finished his sophomore season playing in 35 games for Gonzaga, getting the starting nod four times. He averaged 5.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game and shot 57.4 percent from the floor. He registered five double-digit games including season and career-high 15 points against Lafayette. Olynyk also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds twice. Olynyk holds a 3.52 GPA.

Hart, a redshirt sophomore, played in 31 games for the Bulldogs. His playing time increased as West Coast Conference play started and became a part of the rotation off the bench in the latter half of the season and into post-season play. He scored a career-high six points against Eastern Washington and had a career-high five rebounds twice. Hart holds a 3.57 GPA in business administration.

The 2011 West Coast Conference Winter All-Academic teams honor some of the league's finest examples of the consummate scholar-athletes.
