SPOKANE, Wash. - Former Gonzaga University men's basketball standout Ronny Turiaf is one of 48 student-athletes who will walk during Sunday's undergraduate commencement at the Spokane Arena.

Turiaf, currently a member of the Golden State Warriors of the NBA, was originally drafted by Los Angeles Lakers in the second round and 37th pick overall. He spent his first three seasons with the Lakers prior to signing with the Warriors as a restricted free agent in the summer of 2008.

This past season he averaged 4.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 2.1 assists/game. He averaged a career-high 20.8 minutes/games this past season with the Warriors.

Turiaf underwent heart surgery in July, 2005, to repair an enlarged aortic root, discovered during a physical Turiaf took as a condition of joining the Lakers. He signed with the Lakers in January, 2006, just six months following the surgery, and played 23 games with the Lakers the remainder of the season.

Turiaf will receive his degree in sport management.

"Our goal is to have all of our student-athletes graduate, but sometimes situations arise where academic goals get put on hold. It is a special feeling when former student-athletes show the drive and dedication to finish what they have started in the classroom," Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth said. "People like Ronny are great role models to prove you can reach your academic goals you may not have achieved in your initial tenure at Gonzaga."
