MBB Adds Missouri Transfer Johnathan Williams

SPOKANE, Wash.  – Johnathan Williams, a transfer from the University of Missouri, signed a financial aid agreement at Gonzaga University and will join the men’s basketball team.

Williams will enroll in classes at Gonzaga and be eligible for the 2016-17 season after sitting out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining.

“Johnathan is a very high character young man, and really good academically,” head coach Mark Few said. “He’s a proven commodity at high Division I level in scoring and rebounding, and he fits a real need for where our team and personnel makeup will be a year from now. I think this next year of development will be huge for him. It’s a perfect scenario with being able to work with Nigel [Williams-Goss] and also, day-in and day-out, go against Kyle [Wiltjer], Domantas [Sabonis] and Przemek [Karnowski]. That really creates a great situation for him development-wise.”

The 6-9 forward led the Tigers in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots during the 2014-15 season. He averaged 11.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, and recorded a team-best six double-doubles. He scored in double figures 20 times as a sophomore and had 20-plus on three occasions. Williams also showed a knack for getting to the free throw line, leading the Tigers in free throws made (99) and free throws attempted (159).

As a freshman, Williams finished 11th in the SEC in rebounding and his 227 rebounds were the fourth-best in Missouri history by a freshman. He also posted 57 total blocks as a rookie, the second-best for a Tiger freshman.

Williams joins a Gonzaga squad coming off of an Elite Eight finish and school-record 35 wins. The Zags graduated three players, guards Kevin Pangos, Gary Bell Jr. and Byron Wesley.
